Principle 2 — Integrate and adapt
This is crucial to ensure that Defence can work together and be interoperable with its allies and partners to solve common problems. The UK does not operate or fight alone; interoperability is our ability to act together coherently, effectively and efficiently, delivering shared effects to meet national security objectives.
Use a common approach to integration within your service to achieve interoperability. This includes using open standards and sharing patterns and principles across Defence, our partners and NATO allies.
What you should do
To help ensure your technology solution can integrate with others:
- align your solution with our API strategy
- use a Representational State Transfer (REST) architectural style as your default choice
- consider using a microservices-based architecture where appropriate
- use open standards and architecture to build technical solutions
- ensure your solution is Secure by Design
- follow the guidance in our Common Technology Architecture
- follow the NATO Federated Mission Networking (FMN) spirals
- use the open ArchiMate specification when modelling integrated services
