Principle 3 — Make data easy to access
Our data should be available to users and systems when and where they need it, on appropriate devices and infrastructure
To ensure your data is a strategic asset for Defence, it should be:
- secure
- standardised
- owned and accounted for by Defence
- discoverable
- interoperable
- reusable
What you should do
To achieve this:
- follow the Defence Data Rules
- follow JSP 441 when storing, processing or managing Defence information, knowledge or data
- comply with Data Architecture Requirements for Programmes in Defence Policy
- follow Open standards for government data and technology if your service exchanges information. This includes sharing Cyber Threat intelligence, information between emergency services with Multi Agency Incident Transfer (MAIT) and collaborating on government documents
- follow JSP 465 Defence Geospatial Intelligence Policy and DEFSTAN 00-102 if your service uses geospatial and meteorological data
- follow JSP 939 Defence policy for modelling and simulation if your service uses modelling and simulation data
A set of foundational policies are being developed by the Chief Data Office (CDO) to govern our data throughout its life. These Data Management policies are based on Data Management Association (DAMA) best practice and guided by our Data Management Principles. Once approved, they will be accessible on the Policies (Data Management) page of the Data Wiki, part of JSP441.
