Defence Technology Principles

Principle 8 — Reuse when you can

Share, reuse and work together on existing solutions to save time and money.

You should reuse existing solutions when delivering products, and to avoid legacy and obsolescence issues.

If you need to buy or build a product instead, make sure it can be used by others in Defence by designing common, reusable solutions and sharing ideas, standards, patterns and experiences.

What you should do

To deliver value and quality in our services:

  • follow JSP 453 rules on reuse and sustainability
  • use our current digital platforms such as DevSecOps and MODCloud
  • follow GovWifi guidance to set up a new Wi-Fi network
  • reuse existing architecture building blocks for your service, for example the Defence Digital Reference Architecture
  • reduce our carbon footprint by choosing:
    • more sustainable products which meet your requirements
    • suppliers committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050
