Build your solution from approved technology, data and services to avoid duplication and unnecessary costs
You should use common standards, reference architectures and patterns for your technical solution when appropriate.
This helps us to have a standard approach to technology so we can work efficiently now and in the future.
Using common standards also makes it more likely that your solution will integrate effectively across Defence and industry.
What you should do
When developing a digital service or changing an existing one:
- follow the Technology Code of Practice
- follow the Government Service Standard
- follow the guidance in our Common Technology Architecture
- follow the guidance in Defence Service Manual

Service Management Framework (SMF) when designing services with Managed Service Providers (MSPs) - follow JSP 453 for assurance requirements and technical standards, including:
- comply with Architecture governance policy to get approval from the relevant domain authorities
- comply with the Networking Policy and apply appropriate Quality of Service (QoS), Domain Name System (DNS), and Internet Protocol (IP) measures
- comply with Directories Technical Standards so that distributed Directory Information is exchanged appropriately
- comply with Defence Electronic Authority (DEMA) Standards for any system using electromagnetic transmissions
- follow the approaches in the Network Reference Architecture
- follow JSP 935 on how to get software for equipment acquisitions (including FMS, OTS, bespoke and open source)
